At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, the Global Mobile Awards ceremony revealed the best smartphone of the year. In a final vote that saw competition from Google, Apple, OnePlus, and Samsung, the best device of 2023 was chosen.
Best Smartphone: Google Pixel 8 Series
Known as the GLOMO Awards, the Global Mobile Awards are organized annually by GSMA to promote innovation in mobile technology. This year’s final took place at MWC 2024, where the Google Pixel 8 series emerged as the winner of the Best Smartphone award.
This award marks Google’s first win in the Best Smartphone category. Previously, the Pixel 3 was recognized in 2019 for its Night Sight low-light camera mode, winning the “Best Phone Innovation” award.
During the award presentation, Rick Osterloh, Vice President of Devices and Services at Google, accepted the award on behalf of the Pixel team. In a tweet, Osterloh praised the team’s efforts and expressed their honor in receiving the award.
Google announced that with the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, the devices would receive a full 7 years of Android updates. This might not necessarily mean 7 major version supports. For example, the last major version, Android 18, could arrive in 2027, with updates for this version continuing for the next 3 years.
The GLOMO award comes at a time when Google is seeing increased Pixel sales, and it also highlights the impact of the AI-powered Pixel series in the industry.
